World Breastfeeding Week 2018

In our endeavour to ensure every child in India grows up malnutrition free, prevention serves as one of the most important pathways where a healthy start, blossoms into a bright future. Good nutrition is necessary right from the first hour of birth to prevent undernutrition and studies have shown that the first 2 years of a child's life provide a critical window of opportunity for ensuring children's appropriate growth and development. Drawing from this year’s theme of "Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life", over 400 women, men and adolescents in Palghar came together to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week as a part of Credit Suisse's community mobilization activities.

Mothers, adolescent, ASHA, AWW and the community were sensitized on the importance of breastfeeding with emphasis on the following aspects:

An awareness rally by adolescents in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.

Colostrum - In the first 2-4 days of a baby’s life, the breasts secrete colostrum, a yellowish fluid rich in proteins. These valuable proteins are essential to the development of a healthy immune system.

Breast milk - The fat in breast milk is more digestible than that in the formula. Special immune system protective proteins are present in breast milk. These proteins offer protection against diarrhoea, food allergies and infections.

Advantages of breastfeeding - There is decreased risk of allergies and lactose intolerance if the baby is breastfed. Breast milk is sterile and contains no bacteria. Baby experiences less nappy rash and less likely to develop allergies it experiences fewer stomach upsets and constipation when breastfed properly. Breastfed infants tend to have fewer cavities.

At Govandi, Palghar and Dharni in Maharashtra, Dhar in Madhya Pradesh and Baran in Rajasthan, pregnant women and new mothers actively participated in discussions on exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and exchanged notes on the right feeding techniques. Recognizing the need, more school going adolescent girls and boys took the initiative of spreading awareness on breast feeding in their communities through rallies and. Also joining the week long celebrations were Government front-line workers who attended a refresher workshop on breastfeeding techniques and good practices.
